Lasik and astigmatism are related since lasik is a kind of eye surgery that has been considered a reliable treatment for persons with mild to moderate cases of astigmatism.
What is lasik?
Lasik is an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. It is a type of laser eye surgery that corrects astigmatism by reshaping the inner layer of the eye cornea. However, you can’t simply get a lasik surgery or any surgery in the eye cornea. The kind of astigmatism a person possesses should first be determined by your eye doctor before the doctor can suggest a favorable eye treatment option including lasik.
Lasik as a cure to astigmatism
The most common kind of astigmatism is the regular astigmatism which is suffered by nearly half of the adult population.
Another kind of astigmatism is the irregular astigmatism which is a result of either surgery or injury or an eye disease such as keratoconus which is the gradual thinning of the cornea. A refractive surgery like Lasik can correct many types of astigmatism but this will still depend on the eye doctor recommendation. Other options for treating astigmatism are the use of toric contact lenses or gas permeable contact lenses.
Symptoms of astigmatism
Astigmatism symptoms are blurred or distorted vision, squinting, eye strain, headches after finishing reading or after doing tasks which involves the eye. Aside from its symptoms, astigmatis can also be confirmed through a routine eye exam. The doctor can verify the amount of astigmatism through retinoscopy or with the use of automated instruments for a more quicker preliminary test for astigmatism.
Lasik surgery in children
Astigmatism is quite common in children with parents who had suffered from astigmatism. Some parents prefer contact lenses to correct the astigmatism of their children. But those people who do not want to use glasses or contact lenses can choose lasik surgery as a treatment option. This is the most appropriate correction for people not only with astigmatism but also with myopia or nearsightedness and hyperopia or farsightedness.
A no flap lasik is a kind of eye laser treatment by which it does not need to make cornea flap which eliminates the risk of flap complications. Healing of the corneal surface is only meant for a few days and this procedure is very safe even though the patient will feel a foreign body sensation a few days after surgery.
